About the band’s big win

Since the Auburn University Marching Band won the Metallica Marching Band Competition, it means big things for the university’s band program. More specifically, the win means the band will receive $75,000 in prizes as the Collegiate Division 1 winner, including equipment and instruments for the band.

What’s more, Auburn’s marching band was also selected as a fan favorite through online voting. And that comes with another $10,000 in prizes, for a total of $85,000! According to reports, Auburn was one of 450 college and high school marching bands across the country that submitted an entry for the contest.

More about the competition

Metallica challenged marching bands to incorporate Metallica’s music into their performances with the launch of the first-ever Metallica Marching Band Competition. The competition ran from April 10, 2023, to November 16, 2023.

Marching bands submitted YouTube videos of themselves playing one of 13 Metallica songs. A few of the song choices included “Fade to Black,” “Seek & Destroy” and “Hit The Lights,” for example. Upon entry, finalists were chosen by seven judges who were professional musicians with experience as band directors and teachers.

As far as Auburn’s performance, it was filmed during halftime on October 21, 2023, when Auburn played Ole Miss. Check out the glowing performance by the Auburn University Marching Band that led to the win, which featured LED lights attached to the band members’ hats.

The lights were synchronized to the music, flashing to the beat of Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “Wherever I May Roam,” “Master of Puppets,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Enter Sandman,” all part of Auburn’s performance.
